Citi Bike in NYC

February 02, 2016

Citi Bike is a bicycle-sharing system that offers travelers throughout New York City and Jersey City an exciting way to maneuver around these busy areas. With hundreds of bike stations plus purchase package alternatives, the popularity of this service has surged since its beginnings in 2013.

The number of docking stations continues to expand into Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Jersey City. An online station map is available with a search function to find a specific location. Each station features a touch screen kiosk, service area map and neighborhood map. The renter can release a bike from one location and return it to another. These pick-up and drop-off spots are available 24/7 year-round. Access the Citi Bike app for bike availability and the best travel route.

The vehicles are three-speed utility bicycles with a unisex step-through, one-piece aluminum frame and LED rear lights. Cables and fasteners hide in the handlebars, shielded from theft and poor weather conditions. The bikes are equipped with mudguards in addition to heavy-duty, puncture-resistant tires.

Riders choose one of several payment options. Daily passes cost $9.95 and the weekly rate is $25. For the duration of the time period selected, 30-minute rides are unlimited with an option to purchase more time in 30-minute increments. The vehicle is released at a docking station with the swipe of a credit/debit card or a member key. With a membership purchase, frequent riders enjoy a full year of unlimited 45-minute trips. Purchase a membership online and the member key will be delivered in the mail. Annual passes are $149 with a discount for NYC Housing Authority residents, members of select community development credit unions and people eligible for corporate discounts through participating employers.

Journeying by bike reduces emissions, road wear, collisions and mass transit congestion. It improves public health as well. This form of transportation is also a eudemonic experience that contributes to overall well-being and a cultural shift away from dependency on cars and subways to navigate urban areas. For a unique gift idea, buy a gift certificate and share the experience.
